AS/ISAF Offshore Safety and Sea Survival

This blended learning course meets the requirements of World Sailing, RYA, and Australian Sailing for offshore racing and passagemaking. The course includes 6–8 hours of self-paced online learning followed by a 5–6 hour practical training day covering essential sea survival techniques, emergency procedures, and safety equipment use. No prior experience required.

This blended learning course combines self-paced online learning with a practical hands-on training day designed to prepare sailors for offshore emergencies and survival situations at sea.

The course focuses on prevention, preparation, emergency response, and the effective use of modern offshore safety equipment. During the practical day, you will take part in liferaft deployment exercises, pool-based survival drills, flare demonstrations, and hands-on training using real safety equipment and procedures.

This course is delivered by experienced instructors accredited by Australian Sailing and World Sailing.

All safety and training equipment is provided by Flying Fish.

Course location

The practical training day is conducted from Middle Harbour Yacht Club, with pool exercises held at the Warringah Aquatic Centre in Frenchs Forest.

  • What qualification will I receive?
    • On successful completion, you will receive the Australian Sailing / World Sailing Offshore Safety & Sea Survival certificate.
    • This certification is recognised for many offshore racing events and professional sailing pathways.
  • How long is the certificate valid for?
    • The certificate is generally valid for five years.
    • After this period, you can renew your certification by completing a one-day revalidation course.
