Ocean passage to Lord Howe Island
Join the crew on an unforgettable ocean sailing passage to the spectacular Pacific island of Lord Howe Island. Build real ocean miles, develop offshore sailing skills, and experience the adventure and challenge of true blue-water cruising.
Description
There is nothing quite like the sense of adventure, freedom, and achievement that comes with sailing across an ocean to a stunning, remote destination.
We usually complete two ocean passages, each over 600 nautical miles. Along the way, you’ll experience bluewater sailing, build offshore confidence, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
Our January course begins in Hobart, Tasmania. From there, we set sail on the first offshore passage to Lord Howe Island, where, weather permitting, you’ll have time to explore this incredible island paradise before embarking on a second qualifying passage to Eden and finishing at Middle Harbour Yacht Club in Sydney.
Our April course starts in Sydney with a coastal hop to Eden. From there, the first ocean passage takes us to Lord Howe Island, followed by a second qualifying passage with a direct return to Eden before heading back to Sydney to complete the adventure.
Lord Howe Island
World Heritage-listed as an area of outstanding natural beauty, Lord Howe Island is a true jewel in the Pacific. Its white sandy beaches, dramatic volcanic peaks, and pristine coral lagoon are breathtaking.
There’s so much to discover – world-class hiking, diving, and snorkelling, as well as incredible birdlife and marine life.
Weather permitting, we’ll spend a few days unwinding, exploring, and enjoying the relaxed island vibe before setting sail for the next qualifying passage.

The yacht and the instructors
Our Lord Howe Island adventures are run on our training vessel, SV Arctos, a rugged yacht purpose-built for Southern Ocean circumnavigation – the perfect platform for serious offshore training and adventure.
The passages are led by two experienced RYA-qualified instructors and AMSA Sailing Masters who will mentor you through every aspect of offshore passage-making, ensuring you gain both the skills and the confidence needed for future ocean sailing.
