Become an RYA Dinghy Sailing Instructor and RYA Yachtmaster Coastal (or Offshore with suitable prior experience) in just 12 weeks. This intensive Sydney-based programme takes you from beginner to professional, combining high-quality training, hands-on sailing, and instructor certification. Ideal for gap-year adventurers and anyone seeking a fast-track route to global jobs in the yachting and watersports industry.

Description

This 12-week Fast Track programme combines the RYA Dinghy Instructor qualification with preparation for the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore Certificate of Competence.

Designed for aspiring instructors and professional sailors, it develops your sailing, seamanship, leadership, and coaching skills in one of the world's great sailing locations.

You'll learn to deliver safe, engaging sailing sessions, build confidence on the water, and gain the practical experience needed for a career in sailing and watersports.

Course programme

The programme combines dinghy skills training, instructor development, Yachtmaster training, offshore passages, day sailing, and shore-based theory within a structured and progressive schedule.

Weekends are generally free, although students are encouraged to join complimentary dinghy sailing and windsurfing sessions, assist on Flying Fish courses, or participate in local yacht racing.

Please see the FAQ section below for the detailed week-by-week schedule.

A world-class sailing location

Training takes place at Flying Fish Sail Academy at Middle Harbour Yacht Club, Sydney — one of the world's premier sailing destinations.

You'll sail Sydney Harbour, pass the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, and venture offshore along the spectacular New South Wales coastline.

  • Jervis Bay — pristine beaches and sheltered anchorages
  • Pittwater and Seal Rocks — outstanding coastal sailing and scenery
  • Coffs Harbour — excellent offshore passage-making experience

Expect varied conditions, offshore challenges, and regular encounters with dolphins, whales, and flying fish.

Training fleet and facilities

Training is delivered using a versatile fleet that includes:

  • Beneteau 40.7 and Beneteau First 40 performance yachts
  • SV Arctos (Radford 55) — our flagship offshore training yacht
  • Laser Bahia and RS Zest dinghies
  • Highfield RIBs for support and coaching practice

Our waterfront classroom at Middle Harbour Yacht Club provides a comfortable and fully equipped learning environment.

Expert RYA instructors

Our experienced instructors are known for Flying Fish's friendly, supportive, and highly practical coaching style.
